Most AI chats force you down a single path — one wrong turn and you’ve lost your train of thought. Noesis changes that with conversation branching: the ability to fork any message in your chat history and explore an entirely different direction without overwriting or discarding what you’ve already built. Each branch is an independent line of reasoning that lives alongside your original, giving you a living tree of ideas you can navigate, compare, and revisit at any time.

What Is Branching?

A branch is a new conversation path that splits off from an existing message node. When you branch from a message, Noesis preserves your original thread exactly as it was and opens a fresh context window from that same point. You can take the new branch in a completely different direction — change your question, switch AI models, try a different hypothesis — without touching the original. This makes branching ideal for:
  • Exploring alternatives — test multiple answers to the same question simultaneously
  • Debugging and iteration — try a fix on a branch before committing to it in your main thread
  • Hypothesis testing — run competing theories in parallel and compare conclusions
  • Creative divergence — draft different versions of a piece of writing without juggling separate chats

How to Create a Branch

1

Find the message you want to branch from

Scroll to any message in your conversation — either a message you sent or a response from the AI. This will become the root node of your new branch.
2

Open the branch action

Hover over the message to reveal the action toolbar. Click the Branch icon (a forked-arrow symbol). Alternatively, right-click any message and select Branch from here in the context menu.
3

Start your new thread

A new input field opens at the branch point. Type your next message — this becomes the first message on the new branch. The AI responds with full awareness of everything that came before the branch point, but nothing from sibling branches.
4

Name your branch (optional)

Click the branch label in the sidebar tree to rename it. Descriptive names like “Approach A — recursive solution” help you navigate complex trees later.
Every branch you create appears instantly in the sidebar tree panel on the left. The tree shows your entire conversation structure as a hierarchy of nodes, with each branch indented beneath its parent message. You can:
  • Click any branch in the sidebar to jump directly to that conversation path
  • Expand and collapse sub-trees to reduce clutter in long sessions
  • See the active branch highlighted so you always know where you are
The sidebar tree is persistent — it stays open as you chat so you can hop between branches without leaving your workspace.

Switching Between Branches

Switching context between branches is instantaneous. Click a branch in the sidebar or tap any node on the Concept Map and Noesis loads that branch’s full conversation history into the chat view. There is no loading delay — each branch’s state is always preserved exactly as you left it.
Branching is a powerful tool for hypothesis testing and debugging. If you’re exploring a research question, create one branch for each competing hypothesis, then use Knowledge Synthesis to merge the findings and resolve contradictions at the end. For engineers, branch off the main debug thread each time you want to test a distinct fix — Marcus Vance, a Staff Systems Engineer who uses Noesis daily, calls this ability to “branch off a thread to test a specific API failure scenario without losing the primary debug context” incredible.

Single-Click Branching

You don’t need to open any menus. Hovering over a message surfaces the Branch icon in a single click. Noesis is designed so that the friction of creating a branch is as low as possible — the goal is to make non-linear thinking feel as natural as linear thinking.

Seamless Context Switching

When you switch between branches, the full chat history of that branch is immediately visible. The AI always has access to the complete context of whichever branch is currently active. You never need to re-explain background — every branch inherits the conversation up to its fork point automatically.
Unlimited conversation branching is available on all Noesis plans, including the free Origin tier. You can create as many branches as your research demands with no artificial cap.
